I had heard a few things about Charles Fletcher Lummis but did not know much about him. During a visit to LA I decided to stop by his museum home, El Alisal since it was on the way to the house of some friends. I could have stayed all day. Charles Lummis was sort of a John Muir of the Southwest. Hired by the Los Angeles Times over 100 years ago, he walked from Ohio to Los Angeles, reporting along the way. A friend of Theodore Roosevelt, he built this house out of local stones with walls so thick it has withstood numerous earthquakes in the last 100 years. Open... More
