It's a big golden gourd by the water. Pretty uninspiring unless you are religious. If you've seen a picture, that's it, nothing else to see here.

bupaya pagoda is the big gourd by riverside of old bagan built 300AD. the oldest in bagan to celebrate victory of king pyusahwti over enemies the huge bird, huge tiger, huge pig, and huge flying squirrel. In the NW corner of old bagan bordering the aye yarwaddy river, this is one of the more distinct temples in bagan and probably...

The golden bit was covered when we first went but we took a boat trip a few days later and the refurburshing had been done. Really beautiful.
The area in front of Bu Paya is touristy but useful - say, "taxi" to anyone and a car - old but still working - will soon arrive. 5,000 Khyat seems to be...

Yes, another pagoda that you walk around. Not much to this place but we welcomed the slight breeze by the river. There are some shops around so we went into a shop for a cold drink - set up high above the water with a view of the water which is nice.

The river was quite muddy so not that enticing, possibly because it is the wet season?. There are boats that will take you onto the river for sunset cruise that leave from here....

Fabulous temple. Great at sunset ...................................
I guess originally I put this one on my list since it's shape seem to capture my attention. It was a nice little gold stupa shadowed behind by a small monastery. From here you have a close up view of the Irrawaddy River (much like you'll get at Lawkananda Pagoda further south of here).
It's neat to be able to...

This one is also the attraction that is not very attractive. But if you willing to spent more kyat to rent a boat, than maybe you can get the best scenery of the temple. Our visit there, disturb by a madman. Do not buy snack sold by old lady there
Apparently "bu" means gourd, and "paya" means pagoda. Anyway, this is a nice photo-opportunity beside the broad brown Ayeyarwady River. It’s said to be to be of the oldest known temples in the area. The huge 1975 earthquake, which rattled much of Bagan's treasures, completely destroyed this temple and it has since been rebuilt. A very busy and popular place...
