It was an easy walk from Hale Tapa and Hale Lalala. Father Damian spent time at this church before going to Kaulapapa. This church was moved from it's former location to save it from the lava flow.... Amazing! More

If you visiting a coffee farm or the National Park, then this church is on your route. The paintings on the walls and ceilings are beautiful. This is worth seeing. More

This is actually St. Benedict's Painted Church. It is a fully functioning Roman Catholic church and an active member of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hawaii. They do have regular mass. So, if you are a practicing Catholic, and are near Captain Cook, HI, and need to fulfill your weekly mass obligation, I highly recommend St. Benedict's . I attended... More

The church is open, anyone can walk in. There was a table outside with trinkets one could purchase. There was a metel box on the table for you to pay. This is all on the honor system. The little church is pleasant to visit because of the paintings, but it is the history of it that makes it really meaningful. We went directly from the church to the place where you can walk to the sea on the 1990 lava flow that covered Kalapana and would have destroyed the church if it had not been moved. More
