The museum was big, but lots of repetition, especially of photos. the art museum was actually a gallery of local artists, with works for sale, something that would be free elsewhere. The policy of charging more for non-Argentinians is very off-putting. One would think they would be encouraging tourism rather than making tourists feel unwlecome.

If you have extra time in Ushuaia, this is a good diversion for a couple of hours. The museum is informative, but filled with models as opposed to housing historical material.

This prison was in use through 1947 when Juan Peron closed it because of reported abuse of prisoners and unsafe practices. The museum also documents much history of the Antarctic which is two days south across the Drake Passage. A very interesting place to visit.

This museum accepts dollars as well as pesos, so we arrived at the museum (Penal) with a hundred dollar bill. The woman in charge said she didn't have change so we waited for about 10 minutes, and even though we saw some people paying their entrance fee, she insisted there wasn't enough change for 2 adults and a litlle boy....
