A pleasant morning drive where you can see herds of game, zebra, black widebees, gnu, eland and even rhino close up
I have lived in the Pretoria area and passed the Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve many times. Due to the limited time we had for our International Director to fit in a visit to a game reserve I decided to take him to the Rietvlei Nature Reserve in the afternoon hours before his flight back to the UK. I was surprised... More
I usually have a late flight from Jo'burg so leave my guest house and spend a few hours at Reitvlei. It has good concentrations of game, no predators but Rhino can usually be found. It is easy to drive around and very good for birds at the right time of year, Spring is good.
The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is a 38000 hectares Reserve that surrounds the Rietvlei dam near Pretoria. There are more than 20 different mammal species present and over 200 bird species. Even several of the “big five” are present like Buffalo, Rhino, Leopard and Lion, although the lions are kept in a separate enclosure. There are also Hippo in the dam,... More
We visited the reserve twice in the last week. The first was just a quick 2 hours visit and we needed more. This piece of nature showed us buffalo (yes, we saw them this time), a secretary bird, rhino, jackal and a variety of bucks. We also took a drive to the lions. The picnic spots and ablution were clean... More
Need to take the kids out, and a breather away from home, this is the place. Summer time is here so head of with the braai stand and spend the whole day there. Lots of shade and place for the kids to play.
This is just an amazing place for spending your day-off with friends, family or partner. You can meet here several animal species very closely, for example zebras, rhinos, springboks, gemboks, ostriches etc. The place is easy to find. At the entrance you get a map of the Reserve which guides you all the time. And after enjoying the wild you... More
Such a shame that the Rhino's have to have their horns cut off just to save them from poachers, but I guess that is the price you have to pay to see these magnificent animals in a setting so close to two major cities rather than in the true veld. A very reasonable entry cost - and a variety of... More
This was the first time I have experienced seeing animals in the wild. Rietviei was fantastic and the array of animals I was blessed to have seen was breathtaking.. It was the first time I had visited South Africa and I hope it would not be the last. Unfortunately we did'nt get to see the Hippos but we certainly got... More
Although we only live approx. 10 minutes away from Rietvlei, we often take a drive to the reserve and watch out for animals. With a bit of luck you see rhinos and buffalos (apparantly there are also cheetahs, however, we have never seen them). Regular sights are zebras, wildebeest, ostriches, mountain reedbuck, springbok, red hartebeest and many more antilopes. Once... More
