Mayor of Johannesburg should hang his head in shame. The building and art are excellent. The upkeep of the building is shockingly bad because the City fails to maintain it. The art is at risk of being damaged through the neglect. And the public is too scared to navigate the decaying surrounds and visit.

I am extremely disappointed with this museum. As already mentioned the building is beautiful and the area that it’s located in, in Joburg cbd is safe and allows visitors an opportunity to experience “normal” everyday South African life.
The artwork in the museum was however very limited. When I visited on 26 January 2012 there were a maximum of 40...

A beatiful building - purpose built to show art at its best. Light and airy, contains many important African artists. Bit of a mission to get there as it is surrounded by quite impoverished parts of the city. Once in it is perfectly safe.

I found the permanent exhibition a bit boring, but during my visit there was a hair-rising exposition on child-abuse. That was worth it.
