This is an interesting and fairly quick stop to find out about how this are was settled. The Mormon pioneers were fundamental to what development there is in this area. The tour of the main house (they call it a fort) and the surrounding working farm is interesting. On a hot day, the back house wall is a comfortable 55... More

This National Monument is just off the road on the Kaibab Reservation. The museum's displays and written history are informative and interesting especially because it demonstrates the white settlers' perspective and the Indians' perspective while honoring both cultures. The original fort called Winsor Castle still stands and it is amazing what a relatively comfortable life the white settlers made out... More

We have passed by without stopping several times en-route to Kanab from St George. Once again found myself in the area (I wander off a lot) and decided to stop. The story is told by visual displays and a very well done 25 minute video. If you don't want to take the time to look at the displays, at the... More

The old fort is interesting, but more so the Kaibab Paiute Tribe. The historic site is on their reservation. This was their homeland long before we whites arrived. If you care to ask, Benn will tell you about his life as a Kaibab Elder living on the Rez. If you don't ask, you miss what is to us is the... More

Settled and built by Mormon colonizers in the 19th Century to fight off hostile Indians (who presumably weren't too happy at these "immigrants" the fort is a great piece of well-preserved living history re how people lived/survived in those days. (Ironically it is now on a friendly Indian reservation.)

We stopped in here just because it was on our way to Grand Canyon. It was definitely worth the stop. This is an old west settlement preserved/reconstructed in detail including active garden, orchard and vineyard. We were there in late September and were invited to eat grapes right off the vine. One of the rangers went and picked two varieties... More

Have visited often. The history of this fort is really impressive and to see how they survived on their own against Indians and the odds is worth hearing about.

In case anyone is confused, this is a historic site rather than a natural park like so many of its neighbors. It is very interesting since is nicely combines the Paiute and Mormon history. There is a good orientation film explaining the background of the site. Our tour was by a Pauite guide which I'm sure gave it a different... More

A great stopping place to stretch your legs, learn a bit about some history and gas us. Nice clean restrooms and convenience store as well.

Actually visited this location a year ago....October 2011, but forgot to rate it back then, and our recent trip to this area reminded me. We took the jaunt from St. George to Kanab, which made this a logical stop along the way. The tour guide was amazing...I believe he actually lived there and therefore had first-hand experience at what the... More
