Great scenery to/from the park, where they've been working on restoring many of the buildings. Hard to believe the construction up some of those mountainsides. Lots of trails around the park and off the road to/from the mine. If you've been to the Scottish Highlands, you'll feel this scenery looks familiar (only without sheep!). If you're an historical buff, you'll... More

So not quite buffed up, still a work in progress, but winter skiing (cross country) downhill showboarding and summer hiking all there. Also the Hatcher Pass Lodge is a must for a cup of hot cider or stronger and the smoked fish on a bagel is great. In they winter they do burn coal in the old barrel stove and... More

Mine tours were not available due to the time of year and the amount of snow on the ground. The view on a clear day from this area is breathtaking. More

A very interesting Historical Site with a wonderful scenic drive to get there. This is best driven from Palmer or Wasillia. The road between the mine and Willow is very rough, so you might not want to do the whole rough unless you have a good SUV and the time. More

Whether you like Gold Rush history, or just enjoy beautiful alpine scenery, a trip to Independence Mine and Hatcher's Pass on your way through the MatSu valley is worthwhile. I have been going here since i was five and most recently brought my 2 and 7 year old daughters here for an afternoon - they loved it. The mine itself... More

This was OK. The detour offered an opportunity to see fine scenery and it was interesting to see the remains of the gold mine. It would probably have been better if we were there in time for the guided tour. More

This scenic and historic site is a must-see stop on any visit to the area. It's also worth an extra 90 minutes to two hours diversion if you are driving between Anchorage and either Denali or Fairbanks. Informative parks staff and excellent displays tell the story o the Independence Mine and the people who worked here. That, and the view... More
