Tough hike, not for the fainthearted. totally worth it for the view of the volcano, and for the lagoon at the top. Got to hike in the jungle part of the dormant volcano which was really neat. Some wildlife such as frogs, salamanders, birds, fish in the lagoon. make sure to bring enough water to drink. Loved the fact that... More

You should be at least a fairly good hiker to do this hike. At part it is pretty steep. At the top you can climb down a trail to a lagoon in the crater. It was very misty and seemed surreal. I swam in the lagoon and it was an experience I would not want to have missed. Totally refreshed... More

Definitely a challenging walk- don't believe the man at the bottom who says it's easy but steep. He's right on the steep part but it's not easy. Great views, and the gardens on the way are impressive, we saw lots of hummingbirds and toucans. Got a very good feeling for the rainforest, very steamy and great views across the huge... More

Tough hike, but my 6 and 8 year olds made it up with us in just at 2 hours...in the rain and mud...just fun, rough hike. We went early in the morning and ran into few people, except until the end on the way back down, and ran into many people starting up...so go early, even if it is raining. More

You must be in good shape to tackle the Cerra Chato! It is an extreme hike that has you climbing either up or down, never horizontally! My family and I are in pretty good shape, and yet we all agreed it was one of the most physically challenging things we've ever done. If you go, make sure that once you... More

looks are decieving. We decided to go see the wonderful paradise on top of the chato. there are steps to help you up this mountain but you can only see so far when climbing. It took me 3 hours to get to the top so picture yourself walking up a mountain for 3 hours. I had to spend a day... More

We booked this tour b/c I told my travel agent I wanted to see the volcano and the waterfall. She said the hike was intense, but not bad. My husband and I are both in good shape and work out 4-5 times a week. Had it been a dry, sunny day this hike would have been extreme. Being that it... More

As others have said, this is a strenuous hike, but is perfectly doable for people in reasonable shape. We started from the La Fortuna waterfall where the trail departs from the parking lot - easy to find and follow from there. You pay $10 at the nearby hotel along the trail (I forget the name) and then continue on. After... More

This hike is not for the faint at heart. It is a demanding challenge for most, a lot longer and steeper than one would epect. As a trail hike and not one of paved stepping stones a good pair of hiking shoes is in order. Once in the rain forest you are in the land that time forgot, the reason... More

As people say, this hike is tough. Short, but tough. You'll be using your hands a lot and climbing down tree roots like a monkey, but SO MUCH FUN. More
