Fog prevented a better view, but we did see some smoke rising - no embers. Next time I would try Arenal Volcano.

there is a coach that leaves at 8.30 from one of the Alajuela Bus stations - check google for up to date details - it only costs a few dollars/euros/pounds, so you dont have to pay silly money to visit!!!

Poas Volcano on a clear day is a wonderful short hike on a walkway to an incredible crater vista. There is also a side hike, longer and more rugged, to a scenie lake in an older crater. This makes for a wonderful morning, then you have the afternoon free for Peace Garden Waterfall Park!

Very nice place if you like walking and nature, excellent view, very nice walking trails. Good for family couples and friends....
