Shànghai's version dates from 1403 when local official Qín Yùbó, who had been posthumously designated as Shànghai's patron town god by the Míng Dynasty Hóngwu emperor (A.D. 1328-98), was finally honored with his own temple, though it didn't take on its present name until 1929. « less

You'll hardly be able to breathe, let alone walk during busy periods. I suppose it looks cool but I don't understand the hype. Even the xiaolongbao that's "famous" here is actually not great, best to go to din tai fung for the real thing More

The name “Temple of the town God ” is ambiguous. It can refer to either the temple itself of to the vast commercial area around it, the “old town”, including the “Yu Yuan” garden. When you ask a taxi driver to take you to Cheng Huang Miao, he will probably take you the main shopping area of this bursting place.... More

I'm not an expert on Chinese buddism, these places start to look a bit samey after a while, but anyone expecting to find peace and tranquility is going to be very dissapointed because this one is situated in the middle of a touristy shopping emporium. The Yuyuan Gardens themselves are well worth a visit but if you only have time... More

You reach the temple via a "travel back in time" neighborhood of small shops. During my visit a ceremony was taking place and it was trully unique ... colorful, atmosphere full of incenses and aromas, different "bell" sounds etc. More

I love the place with Chinese culture shown, like clothes, pictures of the times of Chairman Mao, matches; jade art ware, line painting ,embroidery, but it's the best to buy all the stuff, not the only place to know all, right? I think you agree with me a lot! More

All cities have a town god. This is the second most important temple in Shanghai. A walk in this area is a great place to get started in the city. The Water Gardens/the Tea Rooms are close by. It's fun to just wonder and expect to be offered a watch or two..."Yeah lady..." But the side streets are quiet. This... More

A place for experiencing old tradition in Shanghai where you could find some old skills in making local delicious food, a crowded place for Chinese lantern illustration during lantern festivals, an envious place for sipping a cup of tea quietly and comfortably at center of bridge tower probably for me, place for appreciating traditional Chinese architecture(some of them were newly... Most people go there for sight-seeing. Expats, people from outside of Shanghai, once they arrive in Shanghai they were told this place is a must-see. It is worth going. But be careful with your $$$ there. Do not buy souvenirs from the stores or street vendors there because they are all over-priced!!! Actually if you don't mind crowds and narrow... More

Old Shanghai, sadly, is quickly disappearing but the temple remains as a beautiful remnant of the city's past. Plus, the neighborhood where it's located offers lot to do. More
