You'll hardly be able to breathe, let alone walk during busy periods. I suppose it looks cool but I don't understand the hype. Even the xiaolongbao that's "famous" here is actually not great, best to go to din tai fung for the real thing

The name “Temple of the town God ” is ambiguous. It can refer to either the temple itself of to the vast commercial area around it, the “old town”, including the “Yu Yuan” garden. When you ask a taxi driver to take you to Cheng Huang Miao, he will probably take you the main shopping area of this bursting place....

I'm not an expert on Chinese buddism, these places start to look a bit samey after a while, but anyone expecting to find peace and tranquility is going to be very dissapointed because this one is situated in the middle of a touristy shopping emporium. The Yuyuan Gardens themselves are well worth a visit but if you only have time...

Most people go there for sight-seeing. Expats, people from outside of Shanghai, once they arrive in Shanghai they were told this place is a must-see. It is worth going. But be careful with your $$$ there. Do not buy souvenirs from the stores or street vendors there because they are all over-priced!!!
Actually if you don't mind crowds and narrow...

Old Shanghai, sadly, is quickly disappearing but the temple remains as a beautiful remnant of the city's past. Plus, the neighborhood where it's located offers lot to do.
