For a feel of colonialization, Stadhuys is the place. It's beautiful though, buildings are red color (which I understood was white previously - read the history of this changes in color when you are there, interesting politics). Great architecture from the Dutch era are still preserved.
Like previous reviewers, we unfortunately found the Stradhuys museum closed for renovations until Feb 2014 when we tried to visit. Interestingly, there is no notice of this on the Malacca or Malaysia Tourism websites so you won't find out until you arrive.
While it seems you can't see this attraction at this time, there are other things you can do...

I'd heard the Ethnography museum in Stadthuys was the best museum in Melaka, so was a bit disappointed to find signs advising it was closed from Feb 2013 - Feb 2014 for significant work. It's right in the middle of the historic centre of Melaka, so there's plenty else around to look at instead. I hear it's worth it when...

touristy spot, very crowded in the day time. I prefer to enjoyed it at night, more beautiful and mystical.
The square itself doesn't have much. A church which was never open and a museum which is closed for renovations. The fountain in the middle is pretty and this is the drop off point if you're taking the bus into town from the bus station.
Trike drivers speak english so it's not a problem to communicate. even though you can go around by foot (and it's more fun especially if you like to take photos for every 10 meters walk),, i recommend to still take the trike. trikes are so colorful, you wouldn't want to miss to take picture of you in it. :)
There isn't much to see here from the outside. A sign stated it was under maintenance and would not be open until next year. There is a antique firetruck and bulldozer. That's about it. Oh and throngs of hawkers.
while it is featured in most adverts on melaka, there isn't much there ... maybe have a photo but again, to have a good photo, one must brave the road, so be careful! take that shot and go to your next destination.
This is something that you just see during your time in Malaka. It's on the traditional walking route and the oldest building in the town, but not so special. Have a look, take your picture and cantinue walking.
