Fort Gaines is run by a local society. You can take a self-guided tour. All the stations are well marked and tell the story of this historic fort. It has a nice little gift shop. We learned a lot by visiting here. More

I love history and there is much here. A small museum and a largely intact fort are the big draws. The outlying areas are large and part was used in WW1. I wish more of the park was restored but the main Fort is mostly intact. More so than Ft. Sumter. More

We love going to Ft. Morgan on the Gulf Shore's side and then riding the ferry across Mobile Bay to Ft. Gaines on Dauphin Island. This was a Confederate fort during the Civil War. It is well taken care of, lots of history. While you are there you should also visit the sea lab. For Dauphin Island to be such... More

WWII updates remind you of a not so distant threat to your freedom. Vastness of a real fort remind you of the threat of foreign powers who would like to expand their territory as well. Served as capital of Louisiana Territory. More

The grounds were well tended and had a beautiful view overlooking the Bay. We were disappointed that most of the civil war soldier's letters on display were written by Union servicemen, especially since this was a Confederate fort. Most of the information about officers that were at this fort were also about the Union officers. Not to belittle the Union... More

Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan on the mainland are both very well preserved pieces of American history. Such a different atmosphere once inside the fort. The history at both of these forts is over whelming! Could' have spent and entire day exploring! More

The pamphlet, markers and signs all added up to a very informative package. I enjoyed it and I am not a history buff. I liked the period characters that fired the musket, cannon, and ran the blacksmith. I also like that it was self-paced. One thing would have been helpful, as I was reading, it was hard to envision the... More
