Very informative institute it is! The location itself is wonderful. you places to relax outside in the outdoor spaces which are pretty cozy and in shade always.
The HMI as it is called is very worthwhile even if you didn't dream of climbing mountains in your life. For us in the West it was a change of promotion to notice that Tenzing Norgay was listed as an equal to Hillary on the first climb of Everest Vs. Hillary and "oh by the way there was another guy".... One of the most premier institutions for mountaineering. I have successfully completed both basic and advanced mountaineering courses from there. Very experienced instructors. Many of them have scaled one of world's highest and most technical peaks. I love this place so much that its like NY second home!!
Every hill station in India has the same topography to offer and sightseeing is the same old mountain views, peaks, lakes, boating, honeymoon pics, etc, etc. But what stood out in Darjeeling is HMI and I would recommend not just adventure Lovers but every visitor to pay a visit. Even a whole day here was less for me. But paucity... More
Well-worth a visit. The model of the Himalayan range with its hands-on factor was interesting as was the history of |Everest and Tenzing, even though there was an obvious bias towards Tenzing.
The HMI is probably one of the best maintained museums in India. A must visit for everyone remotely associated with mountains. Everything from the spacious layout, the labelling the porch, is worth appreciating. The display of mountaineering gear used over the years is an eye opener. There are quite a few spots for photography. The statue of Tenzing and the... More
For anyone remotely interested in mountain expeditions this museum is unmissable. To see the basic clothing and equipment that was used in the early 20th century brings home what courageous people early mountaineers were. There are may fascinating displays including one of the whole Himalayan range with each peak illuminated by pressing the appropriate button on a panel.
This place is very educative. It gives you an overall experience and feel about the himalayas and the people who achieved this wonderful feat to trek to the top of himalayas. You would know so many facts that you never knew for so long about the climbers... dont miss this place. . It would complete your tour at darjeeling..
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is located next to the Zoo and is a must visit. I remember clearly that this was the place that I first heard of the Himalayan Yeti and that story got stuck with me for quiet sometime.
