Ask the caretaker to take you around and tell stories about the individuals resting under the tombstones. A tip afterwards is appreciated. It's a place that would be well suited as a background in a historical novel. More

Try to be taken round by the guide who was informative and interesting. A real slice of colonial history. Recently being renovated but with limited funds. More

I visited the cemetary on the off chance and i was so glad i did. I bumped into the caretaker (Charles Carmicheal) who is an absolute credit to the place - He was so knowledge and his stories were heartfelt and gave you a real insight back 150 years ago. If you have 30 mins or so, it is definately... More

Our thanks to Charles, the groundskeeper, for his most excellent, intriguing, enlightening, mesmerizing and touching accounts of the many colonists buried there. Along with a stop at Helga's Folly, spending time with Charles may well be the best way to spend time in Kandy! More

5 of us had a wander around here for an hour or so. It was really interesting to talk to the chap who looks after the place, His english is very good as are his story telling skills. We all chucked him a few rupees at the end to help him keep up the good work in looking after the... More

Having read previous reviews, we convinced our sceptical parents that we should pay it a visit. It was a beautiful day, and we immediately felt how peaceful the cemetery is. The inscriptions themselves evoke the trials of the British settlers in Sri Lanka- death from "jungle fever", babies dying just a day old, ... While just wandering around and reading... More

We visited the Garrison and Met Charles Carmichael and his wife. He is doing a great job keeping the cemetery open and he is a wealth of knowledge. Wild boar had dug up a lot of grass the night before we went so he had a lot of work to do to clean it all up again. We saw monkeys... More

Very quiet, just above the lake behind the Temple. Some tombs are well preserved We sat under a tree and ate mangoes enjoying the sounds of nature and the peacefulness of the place. Until hordes of monkeys arrived and wanted all on the tree above us. They weren't aggressive, just too many, so we escaped. More

This place was fascinating. Not much to look at and a little out of the way, but well worth a visit for the history. The caretaker amazed us with his knowledge - he could resite inscriptions and knew the story behind many of the very sad deaths. More

Behind the Temple of the Tooth, is this 'moving' and inspiring cemetery to the, mainly, British men, women and children who made Ceylon a home in the early-mid ninteenth century. The cemetery has been restored after years of neglect, and is loving cared for by a local couple - Charles Carmichael (Scottish Grandfather, Indian Grandmother), in particular will guide you... More
