not really worth effort unless you are in the area for a long period. Plenty of similar things to see all around Sri Lanka. More

Historically significant (built on instruction of the warrior King Dutthagamini) very photogenic, especially so during month of Poson (June) or any full moon day. Read up on its history!, makes the visual so much more interesting!, stand an arms length away from the base and look up at the pinnacle, then stand alongside the base and look up at the... More

It is a part of my Sinhala Buddhist heritage. It was constructed by our great King Dutugamunu and it is one of the largest sthoopas in the world. More

It's not spectacular but worth a look. It is one on many Dagoba's you will see along the way. The entry fees for the sites is pretty high for tourists. More

Very calm place and please dress properly when you go there to this temple (preferably light colors. Ruwanwelisaya is where 1/8 of Load Buddha's Relics are deposited and I felt that I visited Load Buddha when I go there. More

Ruvanveliseya is the dagoba of Maha Vihara. It was built by a Sinhalese hero King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century B.C. The architect ingeniously combined the Buddhist philosophy in the architectural conception. He conceived this as a bubble of milk: representing life, which will burst in no time just like the fragility of our lives. Its dome represents the vastness... More

Ruwanwelisseya is a must see if visiting Anuradhapura! Ruwanwelisseya is considered sacred by many Buddhists and one can see many of them praying here. This dagoba is different from most others since it is completely restored and has an other wall with life size elephant heads all round. Since the path ways are made of stone it can get very... More
