This year was our 4th visit for Anzac day, starting in 2008. My wifes Grandfather was one of the POW's who died in the camp and we are drawn back every year to remember him and all the others who perished at the hands of the Japanese here at the camp, on the death marches and at Ranau. We were... More

A very well laid out and conserved site, the models photos and testimonials are both shocking and moving.I must admit that I was surprised at the numbers of Japanese tourist I met in Borneo, until I realised that due to cold war politics and willful ignorance and denial the Japanese still see themselves as the victims of the war. Thier school... More

A trip to Sandakan would not be complete without a visit here. A sombre reminder of the towns past and the valiant efforts of both the soldiers imprisoned here and the locals that bravely and selflessly tried to help them. A peaceful setting for such a tragic story More

Very informative. Emotional. Well laid out to spread the emotional drain out and prevent it from being overwhelming. Park is calming & serene. More

This memorial garden and visitor centre has been very thoughtfully put together. We had heard of the death marches but didn't know much of the history so found it both interesting and very moving. It was good for our teenagers to visit and learn from this. More

Worth a visit before departing from the airport, as it is 5 minutes away. The tragedy will be familiar to those with knowledge of how Japanese treated POW's in the war. I live in Tokyo, but no one here younger than 50 years old seems aware of what went on in so many places in Asia. I found it telling... More

Any Australian or Brit should visit this site and I challenge you not to be moved. I was fortunate to visit on the memorial day when veterans and big wigs all turned out. I fairly choked when the bugle played Last Post. This once overlooked and heart-wrenching event is now getting recognition. More

This is a worthwhile trip, when in this part of the world with the humidity you just wonder how people functioned. Very humbling. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend people to visit this site. More

I enjoyed it but found the info on the plaques just repeated the info from the little museum. Beautiful gardens -- a fitting tribute to a terrible event. More

A very touching and very moving spot. It would have been hard enough surviving living in the camp let alone being forced onto the Death marches. The Australian Government is to be commended for their assistance in upgrading the site More
