ucked away in the northwest corner of Iran is the quaint and mysterious thirteenth century village of Kandovan. Located in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, Kandovan is 60 km south of the provincial capital Tabriz in Osku county. The 60 km drive to Kandovan south from Tabriz passes through Khosrowshahr and ascends the slopes of the hills at the base of... More

The village is in the vicinity of Tabriz, you can yake minibuses to there or taxis. The ride is almost an hour. The village is great to visit with houses bulit into the rocks. The people living there however are not open to tourist so much so before taking picture from people or their proprties do ask for permission. Most... More

It has a very nice view just in the Sahand mountain slope. The most beautiful thing aboput it is the shape of the houses of the village which are quiet natural in the heart of the mountain... No one can explain such a thing you should see yourself. I should add that there has recently been opened a hotel just... More

I love this place! although it is getting more and more touristic, you sill can find an old cave to stay for a night. Its special format make this village a wonderful place to visit. If you go to Tabriz, never miss it, even if you have to omit other places in the town from your list. Its river and... More

This is a working, living village that is carved from stone. The comparison to Cappadocia is probably not correct as this is a village not an entire area but the same haunting beauty is present. However unlike Cappadocia, this is not a place that only tourists come to stay in these rock like formations. This is an actual village where... More

Kandovan is a rock-hewn village about 50 kms out of Tabriz. Fuel prices being what they are in Iran, it isn't unduly expensive for independent travellers to rent a taxi for the trip out here. Travellers who have been to Cappadocia in Turkey will be reminded of the cave-houses of that region, but this is just a single village and... More

It is said that there are three villages like this in the world, the other two are in the States and Turkey. But Kandovan is the only one of its kind that still has people living in it's houses. The name 'Kandovan' is the plural of 'kandoo' meaning a bee hive. The houses do indeed look like bee hives as... More

Kandowan (or kandovan), is actually name of a village in an hour drive (45 km) distance from Tabriz, North-West of Iran. (read more here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandovan) Kand in farsi means (or implies the action of) digging, and the name, when you see the place, may be because of the way houses are built or made there.
