Shali fortress is the old oasis this is where they used to live for years. To climp up that will give a great view of the whole oasis. More

An amazing feature right in the middle of Siwa. It is great to see the mud brick fortress and we had the pleasure of the mosque playing while we were there. Worth the climb to the top especially at sunset. More

The Shali looms above Siwa, craggy, angular, spectacular in daylight, evocative at night. Go for sunrise and sunset for great colors. From the heights you can see the green of Siwa strtetch until it is stopped in its tracks by the desert...and finally understand how tenuous an oasis is. More

Dominating the skyline of Siwa, you can't miss the Shali Fortress. Home for centuries to the population of the town it was destroyed by a freak rain storm (in 1930, I think) and is built from mud/salt bricks. Though the site is now getting very tumbledown it's still great to climb up the hill and see the remains, giving you... More

We had a guide around the fortress which is very photogenic and illuminated at night. The access is very steep and uneven with some higher steps so care needs to be taken and isn't recommended for anyone with walking difficulties. More

It doesn't matter whether you stand at the foot of, or at the top of Shali - you're view will be spectacular either way! We walked right up to the top - and although not a steep climb - it can be quite tricky in some places - so make sure you are wearing shoes with good grip. It's quite... More

Shali is situated in the very center of the town Siwa, in a big square, there's no way to miss it. There's a very good view from the top, you can see not only the whole town and the Mountain of the Dead, but also the entire Siwa Oasis, plantations of olives and palm trees, the salt lakes and a...
