Shali fortress is the old oasis this is where they used to live for years. To climp up that will give a great view of the whole oasis.

An amazing feature right in the middle of Siwa. It is great to see the mud brick fortress and we had the pleasure of the mosque playing while we were there. Worth the climb to the top especially at sunset.

The Shali looms above Siwa, craggy, angular, spectacular in daylight, evocative at night. Go for sunrise and sunset for great colors. From the heights you can see the green of Siwa strtetch until it is stopped in its tracks by the desert...and finally understand how tenuous an oasis is.

We had a guide around the fortress which is very photogenic and illuminated at night. The access is very steep and uneven with some higher steps so care needs to be taken and isn't recommended for anyone with walking difficulties.

We walked right up to the top - and although not a steep climb - it can be quite tricky in some places - so make sure you are wearing shoes with good grip.
