Highly recommend hiking the trails here. We did the Jeff Friend and Centennial Trails in one morning; approximately 5 miles total and it took us 2 hours. We did the Pine Beach and Gator Lake Trails another morning, about the same distance and it also took us about 2 hours. All the trails have varying terrain, and all are interesting... More

Nice beach with lots of shore birds and few people. The water wasn't as clear as in Gulf Shores, probably because it is closer to Mobile Bay. More

My wife and I decided to see some of the local wildlife and vegetation, this place was a fantastic choice. We decided on the Pine Beach trail, this was a great choice. On this trail we seen about 5 different types of setting (pine forest, bayou, coastal, beach, and estuary). You can pick up a brochure at the entrance that... More

We had a wonderful walk through the varied ecosystem on the Jeff Friend trail.. We chose one of the free walks led by a guide and are so happy we did. Jan, our guide, was very knowledgeable and patiently answered all of our questions about flora, fauna, the impact of hurricanes, and more. Jan pointed out things we never would... More

Two small children, three adults and an afternoon with temperatures in the mid 60s. Decided to try the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge. Finding the trails takes a bit of work, but after a few turn arounds we found a mile long trail named Jeff Friend. Important to know is that strollers will not work on these trails. I don't care... I loved this area. There a few short trails covering lagoons, small lakes, Gulf Coast, sand dunes, pine forests-a varied habitat. I was hoping to see alligators since we had an 80 degree February day, but no luck. Nevertheless, I saw a turtle laying eggs along the trail and few shore birds. The area itself is beautiful. I don't agree... More

I live about an hour away from Bon Secour NWR, and it is one of my very favorite places. There are multiple coastal ecosystems that the trail system passes through, and then you find yourself in the most amazing one of all - the natural sand dunes. These dunes easily reach 30-40 feet high, and are anchored with vegetation, including... More

Bon Secour is about halfway from Route 59 (the spine) to Fort Morgan on Route 180. There are several trails, well-marked, all easy walking. This is flyway territory, so some birdlife is transient, but there are resident waterfowl, too. My wife walked up amazingly close to a great blue heron, which must have known it was in a refuge. That... More

While in Alabama Gulf Shores area a must do is the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge. The hiking, which you can choose different trails from 2m-8m round trip, offers the coastal region like you cant experience anywhere else. The undeveloped pristine beach area is worth the hike in itself, not adding the fauna and flora sights. The refuge has many informational... More
