This was amazing to see and incredibly interesting. The giant Buddhas we truly awe inspiring. There were many large groups of Chinese tours, but because we were an English speaking group there were only about 6 people in our tour group and it felt more intimate. Once you see the caves you must visit the museum to get a better understanding of how the caves, statue and paintings came to be. They also have several of the caves in reproduction whic you can photograph. There are no cameras allowed on the actual caves.

This museum attached to the Mogao Grottoes displays artifacts found in the caves. More importantly there are replica caves (done very nicely) which you can take photos of. This is important as you can't take photos in the grottoes themselves. The museum collection includes Nestorian scriptures and a cross showing that Christians had reached this part of the world before...
