Our one evening stay in Manaus coincided with Manaus Opera Festival, and took advantage to watch an opera in the big theater. Performance was avergae at best, the building glamorous, but not strikingly different from several counterparts in Europe. Also beware: the floor is airconditioned to arctic temperatures during performances, and make sure to have sweater or pullover handy if... More

When friends knew that we were going to Manaus as the final destination on our Amazon cruise, we were told that we had to see the Opera House - and this was something we knew nothing about. And what an amazing place it turned out to be. Manaus is a thriving, bustling city yet on the hillside overlooking the city... More

We were not impressed with Manaus - ATM's not working, mediocre hotel, few restaurants. And then there is the Opera House - a beautiful building, beautifully preserved. I had heard about Manaus and it's Opera House when I was at school 50 years ago and there it was. We did the tour although it told us little more than the... More

My fiancee and I spent a few days in the city before heading to the jungle. A few friends recommended the Teatro to us as a must see in the city and they were right. If you visit only one place in the city, make sure it's the Teatro Amazonas. The building is breathtaking. On Saturday nights, the city government... More

To imagine that virtually everything in this theatre was either shipped from Europe or brought in on the backs of slaves... a remarkable edifice!

Amazing setting for such a grand building. Tours are available at specific times in English and these are a must and musical rehearsals add to the experience. Easy 15 minute walk from the pier if you are on a ship.

We had an English speaking tour guide of the Teatro Amazonas. We found the history of the wealth and culture of Manaus very interesting. The interior and the exterior of the Teatro is impressive. I am glad that the government has decided to maintain the cultural icon. The entrance was only 10 reals...which was very reasonably priced. Our tour guide... More

Loved the opera house and other buildings. Nice arrangement of outdoor dining to the side. There were lots of holiday lights and the streets were well populated.

Nice building. One of the first opera theaters in Brazil. Unfortunately there is not much action: performances are rare.
