This is a quiet and calm temple, with hardly any crowds, though easy to visit. There is no fee , its a lovely monument for a peaceful walk or a short period of meditation. More

It is somewhat of a rarity to find a beautiful example of Japanese architecture on such a large scale, in such a close proximity to a main rail station and here is the real surprise........it's free! Simply exit out the central gate of Kyoto Station and walk 10 minutes north along Karasuma-dori, past the Kyoto tower and the giantic Yodobashi... More

I stayed only 5 minutes away in Hana Hostel and got up really early the first day of my visit due to jet lag and people I went with sugessted this temple. I did not know what to expect because it was not a temple I had read about before I went to Kyoto. One of the few temples that... More

This is an excellent example of a Japanese temple, both culturally and architecturally, and is ideally located three blocks to the north of Kyoto Station. The massive gate and inside roof timbers are quite impressive. The main room contains the largest tatami floor I have ever see, although the screen in front of the altar may be closed. Of note... For the simple traveller with just a few hours in Kyoto (how could you do that???) this is a great short walk. Just a 10min walk from the Kyoto Station, a huge temple awaits. This is one of the few free attractions in Kyoto of note. A huge restoration for the main hall is underway, but it is possible to... More
