The highpoint of Sanjusangendo is the long hall with the 1001 statues of Kannon, a haunting and moving site. Each hand-made sculpture takes the same format, but closer inspection reveals the individuality of each. The long hall lined with this crowd of deities is awe-inspiring, in my opinion one of the greatest sites in Japan. Having visited Sanjusangendo almost two... More

Located about 20 mins (walking) from Kyoto Station this temple to 1001 buddahs was quite a sight to behold. The entrance fee is minimal and a gift shop is available where you can buy postcards of what was seen inside. Photos are allowed outside the main temple of the building and surrounding grounds.

Although you are not allowed to take photos inside this amazing hall, the views you get inside will stay with you for life. The sheer amount of dieties enshrined here is going to blow your mind away. Be sure to pay particular attention to the guardian dieties closest to the walkway.

Its impossible to describe the atmosphere in this temple, crowded with row on row of almost identical statues of kannon. When we visited the monks were chanting and drumming, which may have added to the experience, but this place has to be seen.

This is the longest wooden building in Japan housing 1001 full size statues carved by approximately 70 men over a 100 year period in the mid 13th century. It is one of the top attractions in Kyoto. You can not take photos inside of the building of the figures.

This was a hall full of uniquely designed statues. The hall is big and full of statues. You can't take photos here, but it was worth visiting. http://www.eatdrinktravelrepeat.com/must-see-sites-of-kyoto-part-1/

This Hall provides a great insight into the Buddhist culture as it adapted to Japanese culture. The many hands and eyes symbolize the deities' omnipotence and is very much in the Indian Hindu tradition. The guardian deities are also all based on ancient Hindu gods and are indicative of the Indian origin of Buddhism and also show which Indian traditions... More

I didn't bother to count but according to the temple, there are 1001 goddesses of mercy in the temple hall, and no one is alike! I looked at their faces and the ones next to each other does have different faces. A very impressive hall and there are no photography rules in the temple - to protect the statues which... More

Sajusangendo Hall is a large wooden temple filled with 1001 figures of the thousand armed Buddhist goddess Kannon. The intricate gold covered, life sized figures were carved in the 12th and 13th centuries. There are also many other statues of Buddhist guardian deities in the hall with signs providing descriptions. Particularly impressive are the statues of the gods of wind... More

This is a very different place with some impressive view for those who likes Buddhist temples. It is a worship place with a very long and horizontal temple with 1001 different Buddha statues. The view is impressive due to the quantity of statues and it's history.
