This is a rather unique temple to visit. I took a cab from Saga Arashiyama JR Station to this temple (as suggested by a forumer). There are many stone statues of little monks with different expressions inside the grounds. The whole place is quite serene.

愛宕念仏寺 - i have been to kyoto 14 times and went to almost all the temples on the map and i have to say this is one of my favorites! it's got character!! the 1200+ rakan's (stone statues) each with a different expression is quite a sight! some are cute and others are serious.
it's quiet with much much fewer...

This small temple just outside Arashiyma was one of the highlights of our entire trip. I would guess that for every thousand visitors the biggest temples in Kyoto get this temple gets just one.
Lots of old stone moss covered figures a golden statue and simple buildings.
