This was the most unexpected bit of Xian. Of course it is for the tourists, but it is not a touristy experience. Great dancers, great drumming, great occasion for us. Lovely.

It's a wonderful bike ride around the wall. (not an easy ride, but a rewarding one) If it's sunny out there is no shade since you are on a wall, so sun screen up! (I didn't...)

The Xi'an city walls form a complete rectangle around the center of the city, with a circumference of about 8 miles. We loved visiting the intact wall during the day and then seeing it lit up at night. So nice that it has been preserved.

A walk on the wall that surrounds the city was quite interesting. You can see the differences between the areas and the buildings (from small rather old houses to big blocks of flats) that shows the financial differences between areas. You can also try a bike ride in a romantic afternoon

I would have loved to have the time to cycle around the wall which would have been very easy so if you have the time you should do it. We wandered around the base as well which was great as we saw some of the old houses inside the wall.

Bicycles could be hired but it is just a wall around a city and the downstairs street level appeared top be far more interesting

I guess I had in mind European walled cities and their size. This is on a different scale altogether. I didn't have much time to explore, it was hot and this was the tail end of my big day, but I would like to return and maybe hire a bike to do the whole wall. I love that the city...
