Try to read more about the shows. I was interested in the famous Kirov Ballet and signed for a performance during my short visit. Unfortunately due to my lack of knowledge I saw a modern ballet ( Stravinsky´s Sacre du Printemps) show instead of a classical ballet which I was really interested in.

We couldn't not see swan lake at one of the most famous theatres in the world. Beautiful inside, although very very hot, no air conditioning and seats very hard, so numb bum after 3 hours. Stage lighting seemed a little dim but still a wonderful ballet and excellent performance. Not to be missed when in St.P! If u want a... More

I had the good fortune of seeing the Kirov Ballet perform in London and their performance was nothing short of SPELLBINDING, marvelous, and entrancing. Their athleticism, grace and beauty is something everyone should have the good fortune to see at least once in their lives. The Kirov is simply without equal.

Newly opened scene 2 of the famous Mariinsky Theatre - it is really a great scene inside, perfect accustics, enormous seat spaces and a vastlty of the foyer decorated with Swarovsky Chandeliers and a huge tall shining sunny-amber-colour onyx wall. Breathtaking. I think it is worthwhile being there and enjoy the operas and ballets. I did and had a great... More

If you visit Saint-Petersburg, going to the Mariinsky is a must not only because it is an architectural monument, one of the most beautiful theatre-halls in the world, but also because of a highest professional level of both ballet and opera companies and of course one of the best orchestas on the globe led by Maestro Gergiev. My recent visit... More

Having been to St. Petersburg many many years ago previously, I believe the standards the Mariinsky is worse than the Kirov, with standards slipping. Sure, this is still somewhat "the" place to see ballet, but I just think there are other places and attractions that deserve more time on the Saint Petersburg itinerary than this one because Russian ballet frequently... Opened just recently the new venue became a loving toy for the city inhabitants and its guests: very comfortable for the guests (a lot of modern elevators, stairs, cloak rooms, cafeterias) and presenting marvelous views to the city from the lobby windows! And - not the last to be mentioned- the best sound in the main hall (at least in... More

I've been lucky enough to hear and see performances at this amazing theatre on several occasions. Irrespective of the ballet or opera being performed (and on every occasion they've been magically wonderful), just to be in the audience is an historic experience. The Imperial box still glitters extravagantly; the curtains and chandeliers breathe opulence. No ice cream at the interval... More

Saw Sleeping Beauty at Mariinsky - interior was beautiful but seating not the most comfortable for a 3h55 minute performance. Really enjoyed the ballet except not sure what was the point of Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, white Cat, Bluebird (that looked like A Smurf) other than to showcase more talent - they were good but performance would have...
