Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm « less

Great place, lots of positive impressions, highest-ranking of those is the fact that I was approached by one of their girls on reception while walking around, was asked if I was finding everything alright, needed any help and she even told me a little bit about the exhibition in English. Rest of Russia could really do with taking a page... More

Excellent to see a centre of contemporary art on the map of Saint Petersburg - the city's a better place for having it and I'm sure I'm not the only one grateful for it! More

I visited Erarta during my first time trip to Russia. I can definitely say that it was the best museum experience in St.Petersburg. I didn't expect Erarta to be that massive!! The building itself is amazing and the way they transformed it into museum is impressive. the navigation is all in english and the staff speaks very good English (unlike... More

I can't give anything but full marks to Saint Petersburg's only real effort at a museum of contemporary art, and a private project at that - without it, the city would be missing a big slice of culture. A big thank you to the creators and one request - please exhibit more installations. Game over in the lobby is great,... More

Thank you very much for your review - Erarta is indeed a wholly private project and Erarta Museum is the biggest private museum of contemporary art in Russia so your support of the project is greatly appreciated. Will relay your thoughts regarding more installations to our art department but I know they're already always on a look out for any... More

While if you only have one day, I wouldn't recommend straying from the usual suspects like the Hermitage but Erarta's modern works make for a great contrast to the old grandeur and opulence of kings. Certainly helps you see Russia from a new angle More

Dear Adam, thank you for your review and we're glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself at Erarta. We indeed aim to complete the picture of Russia for our foreign guests from the contemporary art angle which they will otherwise miss if they stick to, as you put it, "the usual suspects". Even if you're in St. Petersburg for one... More

Was pleasantly surprised to see that a museum of contemporary art has appeared in St. Petersburg and has been well-received judging by the reviews! Went to check it out with my family and was pleasantly surprised. A word in advance - there are no "global names" here but it's a phenomenally rare instance of a Russian project with a genuine... Had an action packed weekend in Saint Pete and the only place I felt compelled by to write something here was Erarta. Great effort to involve the visitors in art - just a shame that that we were rushing to make dinner reservations. Will definitely be back if I return to Russia More

Very clean and modern place (comparing to some other museums in SPb). Good, often renewed exhibitions by local and inernational artists. The only negative thing was a security guy, who in very unfriendly way told us that "museum is closed" and turned off the light in one of the galleries ;) More

Some parts of the exhibition in the museum were quite interesting, but they had too much of indifferent and uninteresting art, in my opinion. A small disappointment. Some of the exhibition halls were maintained sloppy, e.g. loudspeakers in front of paintings etc. It's a private museum and you could see it in the commercial attitude - you could e.g. buy... More

Dear Karpal, thank you for taking the time to visit Erarta while you were in St. Petersburg and then sharing your thoughts with others.
