While visiting Boquete the top of my list was to see a quetzal. Late on the first afternoon we decided to scope out the start of the trail so we could make an early start the following day. FInding the trail head is very simple and we walked the first 200-300m in the last hour of light. Right in front... More

This is one of the top 10 birds, worldwide, for birders to see during their lifetime, and you can almost be guaranteed you'll see one if you book with Chago or his son Cesar. Both are excellent with their bird calls and very few guides know how to call a Quetzal. On our visit, we saw two females and one... More

We walked only part of the trail from the Volcan side. It was cold and wet but the trail was safe. We hear that there are some places were the trail falls away but it is still passable with care. More

I hesitate to write a review as I turned up on a lark so consequently only did about half the trail and then doubled back (started on the Boquete side). I took a taxi to the trail head (as I recall I paid 8 bucks, after flagging one down in DT Boquete) and went out for a couple of hours.... More

Started on the Boquete side. We mistakenly asked the taxi driver to drop us off in Bajo Mono, so we had to walk a few kilometers up the steep road to the ranger station. Ask to be dropped off in Alto Chiquero. The trail was mostly easy to follow. It starts out as a dirt/gravel road. At one point early... More

The beginning (in Boquete) is pretty & interesting, the end (the Guadalupe/Cerro Punta side) is very beautiful & interesting. The middle is just a long, hard slog thru a green tunnel. Is it worth it? Yes, for the beginning & end, just for the exhilaration of actually doing it and for the reward of staying at the Los Quetzales Lodge.... More

Great walk, there are mixed reports about is it open,is it closed. Well its open as we walked it but i think you have to go with a guide really, and the trail is not well maintained at the minute as it was closed for a time, but the guides are getting together and slowly doing maintenence and repairs. its... As I understand it, the trail is technically closed right now due to a landslide at some point on the route. We started at the Boquete end with only the intention of walking as far in as we wanted before turning back and retracing our steps. The trail was very enjoyable, although we saw next to no wildlife. The part... More

Though the Park officials discourage visitors from taking the 8 km trek between the Boquete and Punto Cerra sides of the volcano, indeed it is an easy walk. However, they should not have to pay the costs of rescue if you get yourself into trouble. So be respectful. Meet with Park people in advance and hire a guide if you've... More
