Such a shame that this cemetery of the mainly British pioneers of Penang is in such a overgrown state. Weeds/trees growing out of the headstones etc. Poorly marked. Paths overgrown. In need of maintenance if it is to last another 100 years! Part of Penang's history.

So many young people buried here, wives, children, young men. Also Sir Francis Light, Penang's first governor. A lot of the graves have been cleaned, but there are still a lot of older ones who are now unknown due to general decay. Interesting to walk around and try and imagine what it would have been like in the early days.

I felt sad when I visited this cemetery it's totally been left to the elements and sad to think that no one cares for this little piece of England in a country so far away, it was interesting and very historical people died so young. The trees made it a shady although not cool place to visit in the high... More

We walk pass by this beautiful place of British cemetery,it is only about 5 mins walk from our hotel so we had stop.Every grave looks interesting and big,i wonder why Sir Francis Light choose to rest here.I guess he wanted to be known as the founder of this island.Nothing much has been written about him or his companies. We sat quite... This Christian ceremony is worth a visit. There are a few free Sunday tours. Check with the Tourist Office on Beach Street by the Clock Tower and HSBC Bank building for time and date. This is the final resting place of famous Penang pioneers such as Francis Light, James Scott and the husband of Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher... More

An amazing place to see, fascinating place to see. Many of the people died so young, was interesting to look around and see the graves. The area isn't maintained but it all adds to the character. Worth a look around.

One of the stop in our photography tour of downtown Penang was this 200 year old cemetery, specifically to visit Francis Light's tomb. But we didn't expect to be truly taken in by the historical significance of the whole cemetery. We ended up spending quite some time at the cemetery trying to absorb the architectural magnificence and the stories of the... More

Fascinating to see the old graves and learn about the people. So many died so young. I belong to a group in the UK who is doing the same thing with our local cemetery, locating the graves and finding out about the lives of the people buried there so it was fascinating to see how someone else had done it.... What a waste looking at this English cemetery which is full of history and this where Penang was founded by Sir Francis Light and this is his resting place. We came here because this cemetery is so close to our hotel by 10 minutes walk and can be seen from the main road. We spend about an hour visiting here.... More
