Actual castle itself is mostly worn and in ruins, the unique attraction is the historical account of everyone who has come and gone and mae a lasting impression. Excavations are completed and multiple centuries worth of walls and temples peek through the uncovered ground level. The tombs, necropolis and burial urns are particularly noteworthy. Unlike other site of Roman ruins,... More

This may be the only archeological site in the world where 8000 years of continuous human habitation are revealed in a 5 hectare area. I visited as part of a Nakhal full-day $90 tour (incl an excellent lunch and Jeita caves). Our guide was excellent and added immeasurably to the experience. Watch for cars surrounding the castle: this is a... More

I had this idea that it might be a grand castle next to a pretty small harbour like Kyrenia in N. Cyprus. Alas it is not. The castle comprises a central structure that is not open to the public and some dilapidated ruins around it dating back over millennia. If you're a serious history-buff it might work for you, but... Unlike typical ruins sites that cover huge area and little things to visit, this site is small yet full of history. The tourist guide there is a history professor and not just another person repeating what you see in tourist books. On top of that, you can enjoy the old city restaurants and pubs after your vist. This is a truly great sight to see if you like ancient history, the ancient site is very large and you need to put on your god walking shoes and lots of time to take in the history and think that where you stand was a place that people were going on about their business over 8,000 years ago. Just... More

The Crusader Castle site is more than the castle. It is a revalation of Phoenecian, Greek and Roman history with still more to be revealed as the archelogists dig deeper. The museum within the castle has a great display of artifacts and information about Byblos that keeps the history buff interested for hours. The souq and harbour area around the... More

What a place. Neolithic to the present day, 7 or 8,000 years of constant human habitation, Nabatian alphabet (look it up!), tour the castle and make sure you ask for guide/retired professor Yazid Mapfoux - a knowledge of all things Byblos and beyond, tour the street market/shops, but do not, I repeat - do not, miss one of the best...
