I visited this place as part of a tour - we rode the ropeway from Hakone, then stopped in the gift-shop area where there's a nice view of this area's bizarre landscape. Note that you're not allowed to walk towards the sulfurous springs if you have asthma or any other lung condition. More

Hike up a few hundred steps to the top where you can find the eggs boiled in the natural hot springs. You can try the eggs; consuming one egg is believed to add 5 years to your lifespan. The view of Mt. Fuji is awesome from up here. Do try the egg ice cream at the entrance. Sure looks sunny... More

On November 8, 2011 we visited Owakudani - the "Great Boiling Valley". It was among the highlights of our daytrip to Hakone. Owakudani is a volcanic hot spot with many sulfurous springs. The “Great Boiling Valley” name comes from the ever present sulfurous steam and hot springs which escape from the earth. This place is a constant reminder of the... More

Took the tip in early December. Lucky for us the weather was so nice, cool and sunny we could see Mount Fuji from almost every angle from Hakone. We had lunch at one of the restaurants at Owakudani, the food was ok but a bit pricey. Everywhere you look, you will see people (even Japanese) eating boiled black eggs from... More

If you are not afraid of the sulphurous fumes (rotten egg smell), do visit the Owakudani Valley. Be sure to try the Kuro-tamago onsen eggs, that is said to extend one's life by 7 years if you consume it. Do try the soft ice-cream as well, it's extremely delicious in winter. More

Try the black eggs - most places sell the hard-boiled variety but the little store at the Ropeway station sells them soft-boiled More

It was worthwhile and a good experience for us seeing the hot and bubbling sulphuric pool. It was a 15 minutes walk from the ropeway station. Along the way, you could see susuki or eulalia grass with Mt Fuji - a beautiful sight!! Did not buy the black eggs as I was doubtful if these eggs were really black after... More
