This is a short canal and mainly for photography. Just shoot some photos and you will find the photos appear very nice.
It is a famous tourist spot due to some Japanese movies. When first seeing it, you feel just normal. But after taking some photos and you look at your photos, you will find the photos look very good....

The canal appears to be smaller and shorter than it shows on the official web page but still it is a must-go particularly during Xmas and snow festival. I missed both events this time and the surroundings of the canal seems a bit desolated during low travel season but still it is a good tourist spot to visit paricularly under...

Arrived at 3pm, its looks like its just another river and houses covered with snow. And after a while, the sunset made this river looks so beautiful and romantic especially when the street lights are turned on. Be careful when you are there. The roads were too slippery to walk around during winter times.

It is quite place located in only several blocks from Otaru JR station. We liked to walk along the Canal in the night under the colored lights. Many local people (especially senior) guess that it is the most comfortable place in Otaru.

And a little overrated. However, it's a nice place to eat fresh seafood and a good place to buy music boxes at the Music Box Museum. There are a couple nice places to have sweets too! But no need to spend more than an afternoon here.

We visited the canal both during the day and night, when the streetlamps gave it a romantic feel. We enjoyed the stroll at the side of the canal->good for couples, after a Japanese meal (we recommend king crab ramen). The old buildings on 1 side of the canal was a contrast to the newer buildings on the other side.

The canal looks more like a sewer. SOme old warehouses with shabby shops and restaurants on one side. Tourist trap shops on the other.

Otaru is a small town with attractive and interesting shops. Otaru canal is very beautiful at night, we really enjoyed drinking beer at one of the restaurant located along the Otaru canal. Otaru has very fresh and delicious sashimi with reasonable price. Enjoying a cheese cake at LeTao is a must-do-thing in Otaru.
