Most people visit Takayama to see the preserved houses and other old buildings in the nearby folk-village of Hida. However the older part of Takayama is well worth exploration, with charming little streets and traditional shops. There is a fabulous old brewery building that you can enter and marvel at the intricate architecture. The local ice-cream is also worth searching...

the wooden shops in this streets were nicely preserved & well organized with gifts, sake breweries, miso etc available, crowdy during holidays with trishaws tryin to go thru the streets makes it quite hectic thou, so proposed to visit early mornin before thr tour bus arrive

The reasons why anyone would come to Takayama is probably to visit this old historic quarter.. The wooden shops and houses here are very well preserved. This is a nice place for a stroll and enjoy the old charm of ancient japan.

We visited when it was snowing and it gave a very atmospheric feel to the area. If you have time stop and go to a teashop - there a several old style teashops here.

We walked through the old town streets after lunch as well. I loved browsing through the variety of shops. We sampled sake at one of the brewery shops and purchased some gifts in one of the shops. most of the value is fun especially on the sannomachi where there're lots of omiyake shop in the old houses. the house plan is like an old chinese house. their omiyake is amazing, cute stuff. fun to look around.
