Palmyra (Tadmor in Arabic) is in the heart of Syrian Desert, and is often described as the bride of the desert. Its magnificent remains tell of a heroic history during the reign of Queen Zenobia. The Oasis, as it is sometimes called, is located near a hot-water spring called Afqa, which make it an ideal halt for caravans moving between... More

I have visited Palmyra many times in my life, and each time I discover something new. It is definitely worth staying for 2-3 days, preferably not in the summer months. Spring time is quite good, you can even get some rain there. I recommend strolling through the ruins at your own pace, without any tourist guide. If you wanna be... More

Visiting Palmyra like the rest of the sights we visited was awesome. to see past history come alive was breathtaking. it was hot but we hired camels. everything I had heard about camels was wrong. I didn't get seasick, they didn't spit (they don't use them if they do). It was just awesome to see the ruins on camel back.... More

There is no doubt in my mind that magical site should be visited on foot and around and after sunset. When the tourists are gone, or have been erroneously whisked to the top of the Arab castle and from there regret not to be in the ruins themselves. The colums glow in the last light of the sun, and are... More

We visited Palmyra in a long day trip from Damascus. While we saw the whole site and walked for miles, We really regretted not staying for a couple of nights and seeing it at sunrise and sunset. It is a huge site, the variety of buildings is amazing and the whole place is full of history. My major recommendation is... More

I spent 2 days in Palmyra. This impressive place. The area to visit is quite big and at least one day is needed to visit all. Some attractions are far away from the main colonnade are. Citadel is located on quite high hill. It is worthy to climb there as the view from there is astonishing, but you must remember... More

The Syrian desert was an important part of the Silk road, crossed by the caravan coming from Asia bringing spices, incense, perfumes, tissues and other precious goods to Europe. Castles were built in the middle of the desert by rich Arabic kings or princes in order to have a place to rest when they were going deep inside the desert... More
