Wonderful to be in such a special place, sorry it is not given the proper importance. The trip to Sarnath also offers you a sight of the outer part of Vaanasi and some of the rural images. The place is well kept and there is a new statue of Buda beautiful as well as a nearby stupa. More

Sarnath is about 9 km from Varanasi. This is where the lord Buddha preached his first sermon after attanining enlightenment. In the complex is the Dhamekh Stupa or Dharma Chakra (5th or 6th AD), a most imposing monument. More

The temple and grounds at Saranath are excellent. My favorite part was to see all of the prayer flags from all over the world hanging near the tree where Budda gave his first lecture. More

I've traveled extensively throughout SE Asia and very much respect the Buddhist religion. Sarnath should be visited to get a better sense of the Buddhist faith and see the differences in the temples (wats) built by the various countries in Sarnath. It takes about an hour each way to reach the city and i spent about 4 hours including lunch.... More

With free time while waiting for our plane we made this side trip. Historically interesting, but not really worth the time as there is very little original to see. More

This place is great for a morning from the hussle of Varanasi. We used a tut-tut (400 rupees from Varanasi) and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It is a peaceful place - when we were there anyway, with plenty to see in the ruins and temples. Birds and crocodiles are impressive in the reserve but we could not find the peacock... More

Sarnath I stayed overnight since people recommended that to avoid the crowds (which didn’t seem that much of a problem late in season). Stayed at the Tibetan monastery (250 for a basic triple, with fan and shared bathroom and showers). The chanting at the Buddha temple at 6.30pm (depending on season) is very atmospheric. You could easily do this as... More

I was expecting the ruins to be in their natural state rather than concreted pathways upto and around each foundation. Main structure is still impressive. More
