I loved Asi Ghat and went there often during my long time in Varanasi. It has good shops and some nice restaurants and I generally liked the vibe of the place. The Yahfeh Restaurant under the Divya Hotel is particularly nice.

I'll admit, I'm not exactly sure how to rate Asi Ghat, to me its more than just the Ghat, its the neighborhood that I called home for nearly a month. I would recommend spending some time to get to know the area, there are many wonderful people and beautiful things hiding where you least expect it.

Just sitting around Assi Ghat will give you a feeling of how Hindus have for centuries preserved their tradition. Morning and evenings are the best to visit and try and befriend one of the tea selling boys, they can be quite friendly and chatty after they have seen you for a while!

Assi Ghat was not our entry point to the Ghats in Varanasi, but its a good place to exit into Varanasi. The Internet stop next to the Palace on the Ganges is full service for communicating home and offers great driver and ride service into varanasi. The owner arranged for our ride to Sarnath (see our review) and also it...

Amazing. Was on a little boat on the water watching the religious festival of Makar Sankranti, when Hindus celebrated the return of longer days and "put the river to bed." Crowds of colorfully dressed and happy people were clapping and chanting as the priest led a ceremony with drums and live music, singing, conch shell blowing, and dinging bells while...
