What a great area and that in combination with some 740 stairs was a great (and a bit heavy) experience! a "must go there"! Takes you like 2hours with a bus from the Medellin center bus and metro station, however you can see the whole area, talk to locals and make some nice pictures along the drive! The rock itself... It'a nice change from the crowd in the city to be for a day in this beautiful country side only hour and a half from Medellin. The view from the top is magnificent and the stroll around the very colorful town of Guatape is enjoyable.

Been here a couple of times, get ready for a good workout going up the stairs. Once finished, the view is worth it...it is absolutely beautiful to see Guatape from the top of el Peñol. I've heard the weird "GI" painted on the rock, was initially an attempt to spell out "GUATAPE." Enjoy!

A Colombian friend recommended that we visit Piedra de Penol and the adjacent city of Guatape as a day trip from Medellin. After spending a day wandering around Medellin and not seeing what the hype is all about, we decided that a day would be better spent at La Piedra. I'm very glad we made that decision! To get to... To come around a corner and see the Piedra de Penol is fascinating. A huge rock seemingly placed randomly on another hill. Then to learn the history of the area and how they relocated an entire town, how the stairs were made by hand. Then you start climbing and climbing and climbing. This is not for those afraid of heights... More

This natural resource is a scenic place to visit and worth the almost 700 steps you have to climb to get to the top. If you like horseback riding enjoy the chance to ride in from the entrance for about $2.50. The surrounding countryside is spectacular as is the valley that was damned up to form an amazing network of... More

The climb was fun and not nearly as challenging we'd heard. The views from the top are amazing. And you can even have ice cream at the top.
