The most interesting thing about the East Lake is the fact that it's man-made. Otherwise it looks just like an ordinary lake in an ordinary Chinese urban park. The East Lake scenic area is a beautiful place. the boat trip goes through a gorge with very steep walls, with the boatman rowing with his feet

I missed this because I visited LanTing first. Must stay 2 days in order to cover 5 important sites: Shen Yuan, DaYu, DongHu, LuXun Hometown & LanTing

No comparison to West Lake in Hangzhou, but a reasonable diversion for an afternoon.

the lake is relatively small, one can walk about the lake in about 30-40 mins, or take the Shaoxing style foot-paddled boat (you do not have to paddle yourself, there is a boatman)... on boat, you get to see the holes dug out of the mountain where masons used to harvest blue stones for building the city... there are wonderful...
