We went at 9am and the ships were lined up to go thru the locks. We saw the video and went through the visitor centre. It is excellent and worth the costing to get into. You can spend over 1hour just looking around.

The Panama Canal is an absolute masterpiece of engineering, especially considering that it was built about 100 years ago. At least once in your lifetime you should go see this in person.
Pleasant, informative, spectacular. Very educational interpretive centre, great views of the ships passing really close, nice buffet restaurant
There is a lot to see here aside from just the locks but obviously the locks take the cake. The museum is interesting, the restaurant is overpriced but good, I would skip the 3D movie, it seemed more like propaganda that informative. It's fun to watch the ships come through and listen to the narration from the bleachers.
The best of the locks as this is located on the Pacific side and you see alot of ships waiting to get in and make their 60 mile journey.
We booked an outside table for lunch- $$$, but the Buffet was excellent and the view of the ships passing through the locks could not have been better. Museum is well worth the time.
Best viewing area to watch the ships enter. The museum gives both past and current history. Detailed pictures of the new lock being built parallel was very interesting.
I have used Barefoot Panama for my tour and they were absolutely great. The Canal is a very easy visit and I would say most people can do this in about 2-3 hours on your own.
If you are here on a short trip (maybe on a long layover) I highly recommend using a guide or possibly a hired taxi...

A great museum and visitor center. Its a bit crowded so get in early. Also try and check when the ships are passing through the locks (Taxi drivers usually know the timings). The Center is well organised and one can quickly tour the place.
Excellent way to see how the canal lock system works. The station is old but when a ship is going through the locks, they had someone on the public address system telling us what was going on all the way through the process. I was also surprised that they had a printed out list of which ships were passing through...
