This runs daily between Colon and Panama City. We only rode one way but sat in the restored carriage where you can sit higher with curved glass windows to get a better view of the jungle and Gatun lake, etc as you pass through. The ride lasts about an hour.
We made reservations for the train tour months in advance because we found one that had everything we wanted. We were there at the end of the dry season and didn't want to miss this. We went through Panama Travel Corp. and were not disappointed. Our tour guide, Jorge Morales, picked us up at our hotel and drove us to...

This was an expensive treat -$25 for a one-way, one hour ride. Being a train freak, not one I could resist. Plus, I didn't know in advance how short in would be - literature on the trip being sparse. (There is a scant website, if memory serves.)
Traveling just twice a day, once at some ridiculously early hour in the...

You don't even get a good look at the canal or the Culebra Cut or anything really. I might as well have been traveling on the Vermonter to New York City...just another trip on a train. Nothing special even though the history of the Panama Canal Railway is interesting.
We took the ride from Panama City to Colon. The tickets go on sale about an hour before the train leaves. Everyone gets their ticket and rushes to get in the observation car. We had trouble getting a seat in there as it was reserved for a group, but we insisted, and were given two seats, Coffee is served almost...

Very neat experience to be on the Atlantic Ocean in the morning and the Pacific Ocean in the afternoon of the same day!
We have lived in Panama for 9 years and crossing the Isthmus on the train has been on our bucket list since we got here. It took having visitors who also wanted to do this to get us on the train. The ride was beautiful and very comfortable. The viewing car was fully taken up with a tour group and...

Reaching the Panama Canal via cruise ship and learning the "Hows and Whys" of the project was very interesting..."Seeing is truly believing!"
Well it's a train ride. Nice scenery whizzes by. Attendants talked to each other - very loud and in Spanish. We got a good seat, not everyone did. Dirty windows prevent any really good photos. Train rides are always fun. Take a car for the return trip, hopefully you get a driver that isn't in a hurry like Antonio, our...
