We started our Barro Colorado experience by taking the boat at the Smithsonian dock in Gamboa. Our guide met us there and gave us an introduction about the history of the island and surrounding areas. Once in Barro Colorado, we were offered some coffee and watched a short video about the wild life and research taking place on the island....

We highly recommend this day-trip. You get to experience the real rainforest with a good guide.
It is about a 3 hours walk but not very difficult (our 7 years old did it with no problems ... and yes if you sign a waiver even less than 10 years old can go on the island).

The Smithsonian has been running a research center there for many years, and visitors pay US $15 for a visit, with boat and lunch inclusive. The guides are biologists cinducting reasearch. A must for everyone interested in nature. We saw many different animals, from crocs to monkeys, and beautiful birds. The folks there are wonderful.

My husband and I visited Barro Colorado in Jan. 2010 and really enjoyed the trip. Our B&B in Panama City made the reservation for us in July and it seems that you really must make your plans that far in advance - our group was only 8 visitors.
