Frankly, we didn't bother with the church itself. The attraction was the fact that this place was an Incan temple - Coricancha - but destroyed by the Spanish who then built a church on the ruins, incorporating portions of the massive Inca stones into the support structure for it. It has been noted that earthquakes damaged the church far more... More

Spanish often built their church's on former Inca temple sites as a way of destroying the former empires greatest works as well as using the abundant building materials now available to use for their own needs. You can see many parts of the former temple incorporated in the newer church. More

Be sure to go early - when we left, it was getting very crowded! If I had limited time in Cusco, I would not make this a priority - it has an interesting history, and was a quiet place to be, but I would see some of the other sites first. More

Probably the most fascinating buidling in entire Cusco is the Iglesia de Santo Domingo. It's diverse history and the blend of inca and spanish architecture along with beautiful artwork of the two cultures make it to be a "must have seen" on a Cusco trip. You should consider taking a tour through the complex if your travellers guide doesnt provide... More

Visited this site on a guided tour who gave us an informative history of the church which was built on Inca foundations. I simply loved the courtyard and the gorgeous views of the town. Worth seeing and not to be missed. More
