First you hike down into the crater. The views are excellent. Then you get there and find there's not much to see or do at the bottom ... just a bunch of uninteresting fields. Pululahua is a dormant volcano crater that now is fertile ground for farming. This was truly one of the most beautiful places I've seen in all my traveling. Watching the clouds rolling in and filling the valley was amazing. You definitely have to go at just the right time (I think it was late afternoon-3ish?) just before the valley completely... More

Even if you don't stay at the Pululahua Hostel, it is worth seeing the extinct volcanic crater from the rim. If you go to Mitad del Mundo (and most tourists do), a tour agency right next door to the complex will take you (round-trip) to the rim and wait there for 45 minutes for $6. A very long and very... By far the best way to see the Pululahua Crater and the surrounding area is on horseback. The best outfitter that can ensure an incredible experience is The Green Horse Ranch, run by Astrid Muller. If you are in reasonable health then age is not a factor as the horses are sturdy, calm, and suitable even for beginners. English style... More

The Pululahua Crater is very large and beautiful. We took a 1-hour tour from La Mitad del Mundo, and our guide took us on a narrow cattle trail that came to a dead-end along the cliff-like rim. We went at just the right time (11:00 - 11:40) because shortly after 11:30, heavy fog rolled in and blocked the view entirely.... More
