Jakarta Cathedral is perhaps one of must see places for culture enthusiasts visiting Jakarta. Unlike many other cultural heritages of Jakarta, the Cathedral is well kept thanks to its status as an active site for worship. For pilgrims, the Cathedral offers unique experience of solemnity accompanied with sounds of chirping from sparrows that often enter the Cathedral hall making the... More

This should be part of your day. It does not take very long to view this lovely old cathedral. It is the oldest cathedral in Jakarta, and directly across the street from the Istiqlal Mosque. It is an oasis of prayer and contemplation. There is also an absolutely beautifully built Grotto to Our Lady of Fatima on the grounds. It... More

It is quite interesting that Jakarta's only cathedral is located just across from the largest mosque in Indonesia. The cathedral dates back to the Dutch colonial era and has a small museum upstairs. Nice quiet place of worship in this bustling city.

If comparing with all cathedral in european cities, of course is not comparable. But for me its one of the beautiful architecture in Jakarta. Its simple but still look beautiful. I love taking picture of the outer part. And in front of it is the Istiqlal mosque. They are both standing side by side in peaceful..

One of the most iconic site in Jakarta, classic and old but maintained good nevertheless. It has some sort of museum that only opens like 2 hours a day (around 12:00) but I have never been there. I myself is not a Catholic but I think the interior is really very churchy.

The Jakarta Cathedral & its Catholic archdiocese has always been under the stewardship of the Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits who have their origins in Portugal. They are famous for accepting postings in any country no matter how hazardous. The Jesuits are intellectuals, teachers & researchers who established Indonesia’s European-style education system. The Jesuit’s strong affiliation with Indonesia... More

The Jakarta Cathedral is a legacy of 400 years of Dutch rule. With the spires of the two steeples gone, the Indonesians have cleverly built some metal structures to simulate the real stuff. Right across the street from the Istiqlal Mosque, the cathedral stands as a tribute to Indonesia's cultural diversity, social harmony, and religious tolerance.

I love to go on a Sunday Service in this church. Somehow the atmosphere when you have your private moment with Him felt real. Its official name is Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat Ke Surga (from Dutch, De Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming, in English: The Church of Our Lady of Assumption). This church also one of the... More
