Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As you can probably guess, Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is a shrine dedicated to Korean Catholic martyrs. Yes, this is the spot of martyrdom for the early Korean Catholics. This is not only one of many shrines in Seoul but also of historical importance. It serves as a pilgrimage site for Catholics but you can also learn a bit about Catholicism's history in South Korea. The green space is amazing to explore. There's also a church with a crypt, where several martyrs are honored. The shrine is on a small hill and not for those who are unfit or have bad knees. Someone in the comment section wrote about being disappointed with the stone memorial with the inscription about Westerners being barbarians. Just remember that this does not reflect the current societal thinking but is a reminder of the past. It's like an anti-foreigner propaganda at that time.

The word "jeoldu" stands for "cutting head". A lot of catholics were beheaded more than 100 years ago, and their heads were dumped into the river nearby.
It's a peaceful sacred place. There's a church and a museum in it.
I like everything here except the museum. It was focusing on showing detailed records rather than showing a big picture of what had happened here.

This is a holy place for Korean Catholics. 8,000 Korean Catholics were executed there for their faith in 1866, who were beheaded, their bodies thrown into the nearly river.
29 of these Catholics have been canonized as saints; these martyrs have been enshrined in the basement-crypt below the chapel. No one knows the name of one of them.
The stairway to this crypt is in front of the chapel. As I prayed silently there, Korean woman came into this place and reverently went down on their knees before the burial-wall of these 29 martyrs, some of them kissing the floor then, responding to this as a holy place.

Easy to get to on subway. As i arrived church goer invited me into mass and found reading in english on her phone for me. Very welcoming and sweet. She then took me to crypt where people were honoring martyrs and then swept me to museum where i was greeted by a a wonderful knowledgeable guide. Wonderful serene grounds , plenty of gardens for quiet reflection. I then walked down river to mapo area full of nice restaurants. Will return.

We applied for the tour at the website and we got an English fluent tour guide who guided us around Jeoldusan. She explained us about Korean Catholic history and martyrdom and also about Jeoldusan itself. We also had a good time meeting the head priest of the church and he was really nice to us!

We've came to this place since our Church's was named Kim Tae Gon. So we began to search about korean martyr history. And we found that jeoldusan martyr's shrine is the place.
The place itself is easy to find, accessible from metro. Using #2 metro stop at Hapjeong station and you can find the shrine on your left about 500m.
Since it is a religious place, it's clean and quite. We can find St. Andrew Kim Tae Gon, korean first Catholic Priest and our Church's name in Jakarta.

This used to be one of my favourite places to go back to or just take a walk at and I thought it was really nice that they wanted to honor the memory of the Catholic missionaries. That changed today when I discovered an 'anti-foreign' monument stating that Westerners are barbarians and (local) people should do everything to avoid them and their culture. I mean, it's ironic since Christianity has been already introduced to Korea for a few hundreds of years now and it's widely spread. Isn't Christianity a part of Western culture in a sense? The order mentioned on the monument might be really old but the monument itself and the park around is not, so people deliberately put it there and didn't find anything wrong with it. I think everyone should know this before they decide to visit this place.

Catholics were persecuted in Korea during the 1800's. The shrine is dedicated to those early missionaries and clergy who were persecuted for practicing and spreading the Catholic faith. I have to say that Koreans take the faith very seriously and I was surprised to see even young people there. There were quite a lot of people on a Monday afternoon. Even if you aren't Catholic, its a nice place to stroll, walk around, and look out to the Han river. The grounds are immaculate and you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul. Once you're done, the Mecenatpolis Mall is a short walk away and you can do a little shopping to boot.

It is easy to forget that less than 150 yeas ago, Christians were executed in mass here in Korea. The shrine is a fitting reminder of how far the nation has come. When combined with a walk through the cemetery of foreigners, it makes for a truly spiritual experience. Definitely a place to visit in Seoul.

A museum that shows examples of how Christians were tortured in the 1800's for their faith. History says that over 8,000 were beheaded and rolled down the mountain into the river.

One of our team can speak Korean so she made the reservation for us. The shrine itself is not big so the tour is only for 1 hour long.
