We had to wear a black burqa before wandering through this Mausoleum. Sayyida was daughter of Iman al-Husayn, a grandson of Prophet Mohammed. The Mausoleum was covered all over with mirrors and quite striking, reminded me of a similar shrine to Fatima in Qom, Iran. Amazing workmanship! and well worth a visit. I visited here in April 2011.

Jaw dropping artistic detail in this shrine, you simply have to see it to believe it. My wife and I had no idea what was inside and we came out dazed. Non-believers are welcome and at one point a family of Shia pilgrims from Iran insisted on having their picture taken with me because I was from America. I have... More

The Roqayya mosque is one of the largest mosques in Damascus. It is a shrine to the 4-year old great granddaughter of MuHammad who met her untimely death as a consequence of the inhumane treament of her father and his followers. We were there last week and happened to arrive in time for noon prayer. The mass of people entering... More

This is the burial place of Roqayya the young daughter of Hussein so it is a Shia Mosque expensively restored by Iran. The atmosphere was one of quietness and serenity. No one paid much attention to two foreign ladies walking round with the black hooded abiyas! The decoration is something I've never seen before. Glass mosaic on a lot of... More
