This is one of the top ten Museums of the world!! Located just outside the old city of Damascus and on the old river it is a must see tour. The gardens have a vast number of old statues and columns, it is nice to just walk around these before entering the museum. Once in side the museum simply take... More

Despite much of the museum being under renovation this is still a must see in Damascus. The collection has some truly incredible pieces from a place in the world that was central to the development of civilization. This is a collection thatndeserves much betterbpresentation and interpretation. Given the present problems in Syria it may well be some time before this... More

The museum is located in the city center next to the old train station. The building is pretty nice and I advice to spend a minute and look at it from outside. The whole collection is spread over to wings. In the museum one can find a lot of exhibitions from the ancient times mostly form excavations throughout Syria. The... More

Over half the museum's display area is closed for reinstallation. Judging by the very poor labeling of the other exhibits this is long overdue. The synagogue is not viewable and there are piles of builder's debris by its entrance. On the day I went in October, tens of busloads of tourists were crammed into the few galleries open. More

the wonderful thing about this muesum is how pervasive it is..it covers periods from the Neolithic age to Ottoman era...it was chosen in 2009 as one of best 10 world meuseums despite the old fashion way of exhibiting and mostly French interpretations and thats mainly due to the great value of the pieces the must see stuff are: 1-Yarhai Palmyrian... This museum is worth visting. Not because it is some amazing interactive experience. If you need to be spoon fed your museums then this is certainly not the place. No this place has some amazing artefacts, some of which are not easy to find. Please not the following: 1. Many signs are in Arabic and French only, some are also... More

The museum has a wonderful collection taken (or plundered depending on how you view national museums cherry picking the best from regional sites) from across Syria. There is a wide and variety collection of artefacts from different periods, but they are let down by the lacking of interpretation, which varies from being good in the more modern galleries to non...
