chora is like an art history book almost come to life. stunning. as it is out in edirnikape in fatih next to the city gates it is not as heavily visited as the other sights are in sultanahmet. while you are there be sure to climb around on the old city wall nearby - great views!

A bit tricky to get to (we took a bus, but it's not obvious where to get off or what to do after you do) but worth seeing if you have the time. The mosaics are quite astonishing and largely well preserved. The audio guide gives detailed descriptions of what you are seeing. There is a smart restaurant next door...

Unbelievably well preserved! The staff was friendly and helpful! I wished they had the lower section open to the public.

Everywhere you go in Istanbul, former byzantine churches have been converted into mosques under Ottoman rule. Usually all anthropomorphic decoration has been erased, but Chora remains a church and has retained many of its original and fabulous mosaics. One can only imagine the wealth of art and culture that has been wantonly destroyed everywhere else! An absolute must-see.
