excellent artifacts, covering entire history in detail, quite a walk which you should be prepared for. Lost of things worth seeing from paintings to sculptures, weapons, jewellry etc and the changes in Lanka over the different kings. Should be a definete visit on your itenary.
If you are starting your Sri Lankan journey in Colombo and enjoy History, this museum is worth visiting! There are some excellent artifacts and paintings, but unfortunately the place lacks proper maintenance.
The museum is clean and well documented. The artifacts are representative of the History of Sri Lanka and give a fair idea of the past. Could do with a souvenir shop and a water/ tea/ coffee dispenser.
The National Museum is located in a well preserved colonial building. It holds a large collection of artifacts dating all the way back to the first trace of civiliation found in Sri Lanka. This the the main museum of the Country. The building itself has something to say for itself. Although the diaplays are not as interestingly arranged as it could be much improvement has taken place in the recent past and is certainly worth a visit.
The natural history museum was full of very old specimens and it was in a terrible condition. The museum however, was acutally very nice with some nice artifacts to look at - but how real some of them were or true the descriptions are is difficult to say.
Gave a good grounding of Sri Lankan history and culture. Not air conditioned so on a day that is over 33 degrees C, it can get pretty hot. Bring a water bottle with you. I visited this museum with my friends among them so many were locals. This is a very good museum that help one to understand the glorious past of Sri lanka. the statues of Buddha and other so many such collections are more or less same in south asian region however, I was very much impressed with their thousands years old...
